The GraalOnline Flash Intro & the Antago–FrEAk+ Collaboration (2000)

LwMark561 posted a surviving historical vintage copy of the GraalOnline.com website Flash intro. This thread exists for the purpose of elaborating information regarding some of the GraalOnline.com original animation(s) & file(s).

Overview

During the year 2000, the official GraalOnline website underwent a major visual redesign with the addition of a Flash introduction, animated website headers, and a series of promotional animations. The Flash intro was created by FrEAk+, known within Graal mythology as the God of Insanity, while additional website animation and media assets were produced by Antago, the God of Gravity.

The redesign coincided with numerous official announcements, Graal3D development, Game Boy experiments, and other underground projects that characterized Graal's pressure to explore cross-platform expansion during the period.

Among the most recognizable additions were animated Graal characters running across the website header.

These original running animations were created by Antago. Due to the animation technique used at the time, the characters' heads remained fixed while the bodies animated beneath them, creating a noticeable lack of step elevation.

A revised version was later produced by Antago which corrected the character posture and was subsequently featured atop the official GraalOnline message board.

FrEAk+ and B.O.A.M.

FrEAk+ operated the guild website B.O.A.M. ("Bushes On a Mission"), at the time.

Around the summer of 2000, Antago recognized FrEAk+'s animation abilities and invited him to collaborate on a growing collection of official and independent media projects.

At the time:
  • Antago managed the Graal3D website and promotional material.
  • Antago owned & directed development of his original Destiny "playerworld".
  • FrEAk+ specialized in Flash animation and level design.
The two formally teamed together, beginning one of the most recognizable creative partnerships of Graal's early history.

Destiny

FrEAk+ joined Destiny and contributed numerous levels to the world, representing an est. one percent of the original content.

His best-known surviving contribution was the Horse Stables, which continue to exist today in recycled form throughout later Graal content.

The original Destiny project was considerably larger than what players ultimately experienced.

Planned regions included:
  • Glowtica, a massive underwater world visible on the world map but never released during 2000.
  • HyperFlash, a large sky world.
  • The original concepts that would later become Graal2001.
Glowtica has since become something of Graal's "Atlantis"—a legendary unreleased world remembered only through surviving development material and early maps.

Destiny, Graal2001 & Graal: Bomy Moon

Much of what later appeared in Graal2001 originated as content designed specifically for Destiny.

This included:
  • Bomies
  • Gameplay systems
  • World mechanics
  • Graphics
  • The currency now known as the Gralat
Rather than remaining part of Destiny as originally intended, significant portions of the project were separated and later released independently as Graal: Bomy Moon, Graal's first pay-to-play server.

Following Cyberjoueur's acquisition of these materials, numerous Destiny assets were incorporated into later commercial releases under Cyberjoueur (now ToonsLab), despite their independent origins.

The Antago & FrEAk+ Animation Series

Alongside official website media, Antago and FrEAk+ collaborated on an ongoing series of Flash cartoons and promotional animations produced through Antago's Gravity studio.

Projects included:
  • A Mexitale (Antago & FrEAk+) (unfinished)
  • GraalOnline Intro 2 (FrEAk+)

  • Alactic Farlow (Antago) (currently missing)
  • Various additional shorts and experimental animations.
A Mexitale

One of the largest collaborative productions was A Mexitale, an original Flash cartoon intended for both the Graal community and a broader internet audience.

Completed scenes included:
  • A security guard asleep inside a nuclear power plant control room.
  • A blaring emergency siren interrupting his sleep.
  • The guard shooting the siren with his pistol so he could continue sleeping.
  • A deadly game of Red Rover played beside a cliff.
  • The protagonist accidentally breaking through the line and discovering a cornfield below.
  • Igniting the field after lighting a Zippo lighter to see in the darkness.
Although portions were completed, the production never reached release.

The collapse of Destiny following Cyberjoueur's appropriation of the project effectively ended the collaboration between Antago and FrEAk+, preventing the series from being completed.

Promotional Graal Animations

One promotional animation depicted a stylized human interacting with a Bomy prior to Graal2001's release. A still version of this image still exists somewhere in archives, but is not included in this article; however, the original animated gif is considered lost media.

The artwork was designed by Antago and animated by FrEAk+.

Another surviving animation, designed and animated by Antago for GraalOnline.com as a promotional for his original game Graal2001, featured a blonde swordsman wearing Head194.gif (an original Antago headset) attempting to attack the first bomy, Birce.

Rather than being struck, the Bomy simply slid harmlessly across the grass inside its shell before returning for vengeance against the smug smirking swordsmen.

Surviving Flash Files

Although much of the original Flash work has disappeared, several original .SWF files have survived.

These are included with this archive.

The included files represent portions of the original animation series created independently by Antago and FrEAk+ and temporarily featured on GraalOnline.com during 2000.

These works were never created as works-for-hire and have never been the property of Cyberjoueur or ToonsLab.

Any past or present commercial distribution, reuse, or sale of these works without authorization constitutes unauthorized reproduction of independently created material.

Fair Use, archival preservation, historical documentation, and commentary remain unaffected. Copyright remains with the original creators.

Archival History

Many of the missing Flash animations were later rediscovered through archived copies hosted on Terraweb.net, suggesting that Galen had retained backups of numerous productions created by Antago and FrEAk+.

Several additional projects remain lost.

Others survive only as isolated graphics, screenshots, or partially recovered Flash files.

FrEAk+'s Place in Graal Mythology

Beyond his animation work, FrEAk+ became part of Graal's internal mythology.

Following the mythology originally established by PACHUKA, the God of Mischief, Antago developed Destiny around his own role as the God of Gravity.

FrEAk+ established himself as the God of Insanity, complete with his own in-game residence and identity within the expanding pantheon.

Although FrEAk+ was never represented among the Stone Grove (MoD Fountain) deity statues, he is nevertheless recognized as one of Graal's official lesser deities from the original era.

Surviving Development Material

Additional evidence documenting the origins of these productions survives through files recovered from Antago's leaked hard drive dating to November 2000.
